The evolution of longevity

چکیده
Why look for more photosensory and photoisomerase opsins? Photoreception is not limited to the rods and cones, but can occur in cells of the inner retina, pineal, brain or skin. Action spectra for these photoresponses have implicated opsin/vitamin A based photopigments, but the photosensory genes and proteins remain unknown. It is also unclear how photopigment chromophore is regenerated in photoreceptors that lack an retinal pigment epithelium-like structure. The assumption has been that there will be a ‘local’ photoisomerase to perform this task, but none has been identified. What is melanopsin and where is it expressed? Melanopsin was first isolated from the photosensitive melanophores of Xenopus. Orthologues have been found in most vertebrate classes, including mammals. All show little homology to the photosensory opsins and to each other. In mammals, melanopsin is expressed in a subset of photosensitive retinal ganglion cells, and in non-mammals, in photoreceptive structures such as the pineal and hypothalamus.

Exceptional longevity in songbirds is associated with high rates of evolution of cytochrome b, suggesting selection for reduced generation of free radicals.
In animals, longevity (maximal lifespan) is inversely related to mass-specific basal metabolic rates. However, contrary to expectation, in several mammalian taxa, exceptional longevity is associated with high basal metabolic rate, and also fast evolution of mtDNA-coded proteins. The association of these traits was suggested to result from adaptive selection of mutations in mtDNA-coded proteins,...
متن کاملHas gene duplication impacted the evolution of Eutherian longevity?
One of the greatest unresolved questions in aging biology is determining the genetic basis of interspecies longevity variation. Gene duplication is often the key to understanding the origin and evolution of important Eutherian phenotypes. We systematically identified longevity-associated genes in model organisms that duplicated throughout Eutherian evolution. Longevity-associated gene families ...
متن کاملPhenotypic and Genetic Analysis of Lori-Bakhtiari Lamb's Longevity Up to Yearling Age for Autosomal and Sex-Linked Chromosomes
The data set used in this study contained 8793 records of lamb's longevity (days) from 320 sires and 2349 dams collected during 1989 to 2014, from the Lori-Bakhtiari flock at Shooli station in Shahrekord, Iran. Genetic parameters (partitioned into autosomal, sex-linked and maternal) and breeding values of cumulative lamb's longevity from birth up to yearling age (at 1, 2, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months)...
متن کاملGrandmothers' longevity negatively affects daughters' fertility.
The evolution of postmenopausal longevity in human females has been the subject of debate. Specifically, there is disagreement about whether the evolution of the trait should be understood as an adaptive or a neutral process, and if the former, what the selective mechanism is. There are two main adaptive proposals to explain the evolution of postreproductive longevity: the grandmother and the m...
متن کاملLongevity of Amalgam Build-Up Restorations in Endodontically Treated Teeth
Background and Aim: Restoration of endodontically treated teeth is one of the most important and challenging topics in restorative dentistry. Longevity of such restorations is an essential factor in treatment planning. Amalgam build-up is a conservative method for restoration of endodontically treated teeth. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the longevity of this type of restoration in endo...
متن کاملCondition Dependence of Male Mortality Drives the Evolution of Sex Differences in Longevity
Males and females age at different rates and have different life expectancies across the animal kingdom, but what causes the longevity "gender gaps" remains one of the most fiercely debated puzzles among biologists and demographers. Classic theory predicts that the sex experiencing higher rate of extrinsic mortality evolves faster aging and reduced longevity. However, condition dependence of mo...
